Kayastha Wedding Rituals

Kayastha community typically belongs to the states of U.P, Madhya Pradesh and urban center. the marriage rituals of this community are a bit bit completely different from different communities. Kayastha wedding rituals ar of choked with excitement and life. The family of the Kayastha bride & groom fix the wedding. when end the bride/groom, the members of the family fix a wedding date, that is auspicious in step with their birth chart.


Lagan Ceremony: Kayastha marriage ceremony starts with lagan. The family of bride and groom send a proper invite in the form of a lagan patrika. The lagan patrika is shipped at the side of a silver-covered coconut, betel pepper dotty and gold-covered barley. Besides, the bride’s family also sends clothes for the groom and his family, sweets, dry fruits and fruits ar another necessary gifts that they often send to his family as ritual. Everything if given to groom when the Ganesh Puja.

Fixing the wedding date: when the lagan ceremony, all the male members of each families fix a wedding date recommended by associate soothsayer. They share the list of invitees to start out the wedding arrangements.

Bhat Nyotna: Kayastha wedding celebration begin with bhat nyotna. The ceremony is usually performed on a daily basis or 2 days before the wedding. The mother of the bride/groom visits her maternal home to ask her oldsters and family to return to her daughter/son’s wedding and provides him/her blessings. After this, the invites letter is distributed to all or any the relatives from the maternal side.

Haldi Kutai: The mother of the groom along with other girls of the family performs this auspicious ritual. All the ladies accompany the mother of the groom during this ritual, wear their chunri, nath and tikka. They prepare a refined powder of turmeric and sing folk songs. This haldi is then sent to the bride’s family for ubtan.

Tilak Ceremony: The bride’s brother and other male members of the family visit the groom’s house for this ritual. This ritual signifies that the family of the bride has accepted the groom to wed their girl. they provide various gifts like silverwares, groom’s clothes and clothes for his family, sweets, dry fruits and jewelries for the groom and his immediate family. Even they additionally gift the marriage dress to the groom.

Mehendi ceremony: All the women of the bride’s family as well as the bride apply the mehendi on hands. Even the bride applies the mehendi on her hands and feet. The females within the groom’s family also apply mehendi on their hands. The groom also applies mehendi as shagun.
